On January 26, the Consulate General of India in New York celebrated Indian Republic Day with international dignitaries, United States elected officials and the New York community. India is the world’s largest democracy and Republic Day honors the date in which the Constitution of India was established. Republic Day in New York was celebrated with poetry readings, dance performances and an evening reception. New York City has the largest South Asian population in the United States. Queens, one of the most diverse districts in the country, was represented by Assemblymember David Weprin and Councilmember Paul Vallone. Both elected officials represent districts that are more than 20 percent South Asian, many of whom are of Indian descent.
